in St. James Park at the break of dawn,
Paul and I and Beverly
were easing down from an all-night high.
alter their behavior
when a scientist is watching.
Everything waits to be noticed:
a tree falling with no one there,
the full potential of a love affair,
twenty-eight geese in sudden flight...
