Sometimes I unconsciously fall into song, and for years I have
wondered, "Why that song? Why then?" Now I believe that it
sometimes works like this:
Random
unconscious mentation contains
moments
of summation - we name our
state
of being to ourselves, as a momentary
synthesis,
a philosophic still: "Am I blue?"
Often
this summation comes close to a song
phrase
(specifically, its lyric) such as to trip
off
the singing of the phrase: "They're not
making
the skies so blue this year . . ."
I pull up to TWA at JFK. It
is July 4. I am going to Juneau.
Awkwardly, I follow my suitcase from the car to the curb. I
pick it up; I carry on. I sing the bridge of "Yesterday."
