Day 4 - December 31, 1999
THE BROKEN BOTTLE

We are currently anchored off of Deception Island, in a place called Whalers Bay. I went ashore this morning and found out immediately why this place has such a name, as we rode the Zodiac to the landing site, we passed Crab Eating Seals and more Chinstrap Penguins, but the sight that everyone in the Zodiac, will not soon forget, was the few remaining Whale bones that we passed on a remote part of the Island.

Disused whale oil tanks

The first manmade things you see when you land, are 3 giant tanks which were used to boil Whale blubber, in the early 1900s this place was indeed a Whaling Station. I'm glad to know, that as we enter a new Millennium, Mankind is relearning the respect it lost for the planet and the millions of other inhabitants we share it with.

The wreck of the whaling ship Petrel, harpoon gun at the ready, sinks slowly in the harbor.

During my walk on the beach, I found a broken bottle sticking out of the sand, I don't know where it came from or how long it had been there. Without thinking, I bent down and picked up the broken glass and took it to a place out of harms way, it dawned on me a little later, what I had done. I've been on this Planet for 39 years, it took me less than 10 minutes to clean up the glass, I showed myself without really thinking about it, that I, like anyone else, can make a difference.

7:30pm. We have just finished rehearsing "She Moved Through The Fair" with the Chieftains, it sounds great. We are doing 2 shows tonight as special guests of the Chieftains, Eric Weissberg is sitting in on a couple of up tempo numbers playing Banjo.

I would like to take this opportunity, to wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and healthy 2000.
